Let me tell you a story about how this sandwich came to be. Several weeks ago, Dennis went to a local restaurant with his family. He ordered a very inconspicuous salmon dish, expecting a good meal, but nothing like what he ended up with. He waited patiently, and when he saw the striking purple sauerkraut piled on top, that’s when he knew he needed to find a way to use this unique twist on sauerkraut in a recipe. That is how this sandwich was born.
Now, purple sauerkraut is just like regular sauerkraut, but is made using red cabbage instead of green, so if you can’t find any of this stuff, feel free to use the regular green kind. However, if you can get your hands on some purple sauerkraut, or if you can make it yourself, it will turn a delicious sandwich into something unforgettable.
Obviously, you can sub out the ham for corned beef or pastrami if you want a more traditional Reuben sandwich, and feel free to adjust the ingredients to use whatever you have on hand.
We use Black Russian Pumpernickel Bread for this sandwich to really make the colors pop, but a nice Rye Bread works nicely too.
How to Make a Purple Reuben Sandwich
Ingredients:
- 2 slices Black Russian Pumpernickel Bread
- 3-4 slices Deli Sliced Ham
- Heaping ¼ cup Purple Sauerkraut
- 1-2 slices Swiss Cheese
- Mayonnaise
- Thousand Island Dressing (or creamy dressing of choice)
Directions:
Add a layer of Thousand Island dressing to one slice of bread. Add slices of ham, cheese, and sauerkraut. To the other slice of bread, spread on mayonnaise, and top your sandwich. That's it!
