Prairie Sunflower Bread Mix
This nutty bread is a treat for toast and jam but works surprisingly well with sandwiches.
Can I use this mix in my 1 pound capacity or 1.5 pound capacity bread machine?
We have designed our mixes specifically for 2 lb. capacity machines. However, you may still find success with 1.5 lb. capacity machines. You may expect to see the top of the loaf touch the lid of the machine towards the end of the baking cycle. This may lead to imperfect baking in that one spot on the loaf. The rest of the loaf should be fine. For 1 lb. bread machines, we recommend only running the bread on the dough cycle and then transfer the dough to a pan for baking in a conventional oven. See packaging for more info.
Why do the directions ask me to use a thermometer?
Yeast is very sensitive to heat and other environmental factors. We have tested and designed our mixes to find the sweet spot for yeast activity to get the best rise. Even just a few degrees off on water temperature can make a big impact on the quality of your bread. Measuring the temperature of your water accurately is the best way to ensure consistently successful bread baking.
I followed the directions exactly and I see had a problem with my bread? What can I do?
Sometimes bread issues happen. We are happy to help. Send us a picture of your bread and a picture of the back packaging of your bread mix to our customer support email at customerservice@preparedpantry.com. Include as much detail as possible about your baking process and bread machine model so we can troubleshoot the cause of the issue.
Should I adjust my mix for high altitudes?
We don't recommend making any changes to the mix for high altitudes. We have tested our mixes in a variety of locations and have fine tuned each mix to be the best product possible.
I don't have a bread machine or a stand-type mixer. Can I still make this bread in my oven?
- Yes! Our bread mixes are designed for bread machines or oven. You can make them in a variety of ways such as a free standing artisan loaf, rolls, hamburger buns and more. See our Bread Baking Guide for more info on baking bread in the oven.
Merri Ann and I were both raised in the West—in different towns and and in different states—but we met in Alaska. All five of our kids were born there.
We ended up in Minnesota for ten years, where we missed the West, our families, and the mountains. We eventually moved there, but not without frequently crossing the Dakotas to see family and the mountains.
We loved the Dakotas, with sunflowers as far as the eye could see and straight roads that stretched into the horizon—beautiful, bright, clean countrysides.
When we finally settled in Idaho to start our business, we had to have a Prairie Sunflower Bread with lots of sunflower seeds.

- What's prairie sunflower bread like? It's nutty, really nutty--lots of sunflower kernels. You've never had a bread this nutty.
- Are the kernels hard? Sunflower seeds are a little softer than peanuts, not hard like walnuts.
- Is it a wheat or a white bread? It's a wheat bread, but it has enough white flour to temper the wheat flour.
- Is it a healthy bread? Yes. Whole wheat flour, lots of sunflower kernels, and milk.
- What's this bread like? It's a tawney-cream-colored loaf with a moist, soft interior and a soft, golden crust. It's not dry and crumbly at all.
- Will my kids like it? That depends on whether they like the seeds. The seeds are baked, so they're softer than what they might expect. If they like chunky peanut butter, they'll be okay with this.
- Why is the water temperature important? The ideal temperature for yeast is 79 degrees. That's where yeast grows best.
- Is it sweet? Not really, pleasant, and mild but not sweet. It does have milk and a touch of sugar.
- What do I need to add? Only butter and water. An SAF yeast packet is included!
- It says "no preservatives." We add nothing except a touch of dough enhancer to help the yeast grow. Without preservatives, it won't last forever. If you're not going to use it in four or five days, freeze the extra.
This is a bestseller. Nearly one in four reviewers say this is their "best" or "favorite" bread, which is pretty good considering there are nearly 100 breads to choose from.
"I have tried and enjoyed many of Prepared Pantry's bread mixes but have found Prairie Sunflower to be my favorite." Vicki Vaughn
This is the best light sunflower bread. We made it with freshly milled bread flour from our neighbors in Montana, just enough stone-ground whole wheat flour to give it body. Then, we loaded it with 3/4 cup of sunflower seeds. You won't find anything like it elsewhere! Finally, this bread is made with 1/4 cup of butter. No wonder it's so rich and flavorful!
"Prairie Sunflower bread is awesome and flavorful, and you also get the nutty crunch of the sunflower seeds. Wow!! Totally delicious!!" Jeannie McCall
This is a favorite bread for morning toast.
"We buy it every time we order. We like the flavor and texture, and it toasts beautifully!" Matthew Rodriguez
Make this your favorite mix. Your family will love it for sandwiches and toast. It's a hearty, healthy loaf yet moist and soft. Your family will love it.

like it very much, first time trying and it makes great toast. Also used to make bread crumbs and it was great on top of casserole. Can see using it for alot of different things.
Nice and tasty. Easy to make. Not dense for slicing sandwiches, but very good taste
We love your mixes trying all of them. So easy to use. Will continue to buy.
I think this was the first loaf I baked from the Pantry … it has remained my very favorite bread to this day (have been using PPB for quite awhile) … so much so, I used to share but not much anymore 🌻❤️
