Can I use this mix in my 1 pound capacity or 1.5 pound capacity bread machine?

We have designed our mixes specifically for 2 lb. capacity machines. However, you may still find success with 1.5 lb. capacity machines. You may expect to see the top of the loaf touch the lid of the machine towards the end of the baking cycle. This may lead to imperfect baking in that one spot on the loaf. The rest of the loaf should be fine. For 1 lb. bread machines, we recommend only running the bread on the dough cycle and then transfer the dough to a pan for baking in a conventional oven. See packaging for more info.

Why do the directions ask me to use a thermometer?

Yeast is very sensitive to heat and other environmental factors. We have tested and designed our mixes to find the sweet spot for yeast activity to get the best rise. Even just a few degrees off on water temperature can make a big impact on the quality of your bread. Measuring the temperature of your water accurately is the best way to ensure consistently successful bread baking.

I followed the directions exactly and I see had a problem with my bread? What can I do?

Sometimes bread issues happen. We are happy to help. Send us a picture of your bread and a picture of the back packaging of your bread mix to our customer support email at Include as much detail as possible about your baking process and bread machine model so we can troubleshoot the cause of the issue.

Should I adjust my mix for high altitudes?

We don't recommend making any changes to the mix for high altitudes. We have tested our mixes in a variety of locations and have fine tuned each mix to be the best product possible.

I don't have a bread machine or a stand-type mixer. Can I still make this bread in my oven?

  • What makes this bread so good? The basic recipe is a really good recipe with better ingredients.  The flour is milled by General Mills in Montana. We're 93 miles from the Montana border.
  • What else? The cracked wheat and milk.  It costs more to make bread with milk, but it sure makes better bread. The lactose in the milk makes the bread softer and sweeter.
  • What about the cracked wheat? That's fun! They're chewy little pieces, not hard. If the pieces are too big, they don't get soft.  These are perfect. It gives it an almost texture.
  • Anything else? It's fresher. Flour is packaged in paper bags. We get our flour weekly. Then we get it out of the paper and into the mixes and Mylar bags right away. That helps.
  • Those sandwiches look really good. What makes this a sandwich bread? It's moist and wholesome and holds together well.  You'll like it. It's a bestseller.
  • What else makes this bread different?  The preservatives. We hate preservatives. So, we don't use any. It's a healthier product.
  • Well, how long will my bread last? The mix will last a long time. Most mixes will last a year or more. Once baked, use it within four or five days.  If you need it to last longer than that, freeze part of your loaf.

This is a heritage bread, a bread like our grandmothers made with finely cracked wheat to create a hearty, wholesome bread. Your family will like it too. This is an intriguing, premium bread with the right mixture of whole wheat and bread flour. Your family will like the sweet, nutty taste without the bitter aftertaste of some whole wheat breads.

It's wholesome but doesn't have hard pieces of chopped grains. The long cycle of mixing your bread and letting it rise softens the tiny grain pieces. They're chewy, not hard. Even your kids will eat this bread.

Give it a try, and add this to your cart.

This is a five-star bread. Seventy-four of 77 reviewers gave this bread five stars. Two of the three remaining haven't tried it yet.  One arrived with a slit bag.  (I don't understand that.)

"I am literally obsessed with your bread machine mixes. I have tried almost all of the varieties and can honestly say there isn't a bad one in the bunch. I like to make the dough in my bread machine and then let it do the final rise in a real loaf pan as I don't like the shape of the loaf my bread machine makes even though I love the convenience of it when it comes to making the dough. Your mixes make bread-making at home so simple and easy--my husband and I can't eat store-bought bread anymore. (why would we?) Your mixes are priced so well too, we can have a different flavor of bread, made at home, every week all for the cost of a premium store-bought loaf. I couldn't be more pleased. So happy I found Prepared Pantry!!!"  Laurie Bedard

    Cracked wheat bread

Delicious I did add 2 tablespoons of honey on my second bread that I made and that made it a little bit sweeter which I liked. I worked in a scratch making bakery for 15 years and the bread reminded me of the bread made there!

    Cracked Wheat produces big grin!

Not only is this recipe flavorful, but the bread is so light it almost isn't there! I will definitely order this one again!
