It looks like breakfast, but maybe it's lunch. That's Apple Pie French Toast — apple pie filling tucked inside your homemade bread, soaked in an egg wash, and cooked until the outside is crispy and golden. Nobody does this. You do.
It's going to be a good Tuesday.
What You Need
- Two slices of your favorite homemade bread — Pumpkin Walnut Bread is especially good here
- Apple Pastry Filling (or a can of apple pie filling)
- 1 large egg per ¼ cup of milk (egg wash)
- A pinch of salt
- Butter for the griddle
How to Make It
Make a sandwich with the apple filling between two slices of homemade bread. Whisk together your egg wash — one large egg per ¼ cup of milk, with a pinch of salt. Soak the sandwich in the egg wash, 30 seconds to a minute per side, then lift it onto a hot buttered griddle.
Cook on medium heat — slightly lower than you’d think, so the heat has time to soak through both slices. Cook until set and golden on each side. You’re cooking a custard here — don’t rush it.

How to Finish It
Drizzle with maple syrup or one of our buttermilk syrups — Original, Butter Rum, or Cinnamon. Buttermilk syrup has a soft caramel tone that pairs beautifully with the apple filling.
For the finishing touch, drop a dollop of cinnamon or caramel whipped cream on top. Make it with caramel flavor instead of vanilla and brown sugar instead of granulated. Add meringue powder to stabilize it so it holds its peaks at the table.
A handful of chopped walnuts on top doesn’t hurt either.
Variations
Caramel Apple Pie French Toast is magnificent, but you can go in any direction from here. Try a different bread, a different filling, a different syrup. We have 144 bread mixes, 12 pastry fillings, and seven syrup mixes — built for experimenting.
