It's made with old-fashioned rolled oats, a little whole wheat, and the finest Montana bread flour we can find.

It's light and moist, touched with a light creamy bronze color. It's a family loaf, a sandwich loaf. The oats are soft, just part of the crumb, but they hold the bread together and trap moisture.

And it has plenty of milk. Dairy always makes bread better. It softens the flavors and sweetens the bread.

Because of the oats and moisture, this bread stays fresh a day or two longer. This is a good choice for someone who can't eat a lot of bread. (You can also freeze part of the loaf. Slice it while it's fresh, put waxed paper squares between slices, and freeze it in a plastic bag. When you want another slice, stick it in the toaster and you'll have fresh bread in no time.)

This bread makes fabulous sandwiches. For this sandwich, the bread was pan toasted--fried on one side in butter in a heavy skillet.

It was made with:

  • Mayo
  • Deli meats
  • Swiss cheese
  • Tomato
  • lettuce
  • Pepper and salt

Don't forget the seasoning. It's amazing what a little pepper and salt does for a sandwich.


Directions for use in the oven

  1. Place the mix in your stand-type mixer along with the yeast and melted butter or oil (if called for on package directions). Add water. Use 110°F water instead of 80°F.
  2. With the dough hook, mix slowly until the dough ball forms. Turn the speed to medium high and mix for five to ten minutes until the gluten forms and the dough becomes stretchy and elastic.
  3. Place the dough in a large greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, about one hour, depending on room temperature.
  4. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Turn the dough onto a lightly greased or floured work area and form your loaf. Place your dough in a 9 x 5-inch pan or other pan and let rise until the size has doubled and bubbles are about to surface.
  5. When the bread has raised, place the loaf on the center rack of the oven. Bake for 35 minutes or until the bread is done. The internal temperature should reach 190°F. Remove the loaf from the pan and let it cool slightly before slicing.

NOTE: If you make this bread in your bread machine, water temperature is critical. Please use a thermometer to measure water at 80 degrees and we'll guarantee the bread. If you are baking the bread in the oven, use water that is 110°F.

I had ordered 6 mixes and fiinally got around to the oat mix. It was really nice, such a large loaf of bread and very good. I still have a couple mixes, ( my son made another one today).and will probably make them withing the next week or so. I had ordered before and was well pleased with that order also.
