This makes any day a special day! Make French toast sticks and dip them in scrumptious syrup. It's like French fries, only better.
You have directions for two kinds of French toast sticks:
- Sunday French Toast Sticks
- Cinnamon-Sugar French Toast Sticks
French toast sticks don't take much longer than plain French toast, but they are way more fun. They turn a regular breakfast into a Saturday morning fun breakfast.
You will need butter to add to both mixes. The syrup mix will make three to four cups of fabulous buttermilk syrup. Buttermilk syrup is a caramel-flavored syrup with notes of butterscotch.
How to Make Sunday French Toast Sticks

- Take two slices off bread and make a sandwich. You can use jm for a filling, peanut butter and jam, or. if you want more flavor, use a pastry filling. Make as many sandwiches as you like.
- Trim the edges and cut the sandwiches into sticks of approximately equal thickness on all sides.
- Soak the sticks in egg wash, just like normal French toast, and fry them. Simple. Be sure and cook them on all four sides. Since your French toast sticks are twice as thick as regular French toast, turn the temperature down a smidge, and give the heat time to soak through both slices.
Make the syrup according to package directions. The syrup will become darker and thicker as it cooks. Cook it until is the color of caramel.
Fill ramekins or little bowls with syrup, one for each family member.
Let the kids — and adults — loose to dip away. Dipping is more fun than using a fork. (Did you ever see anyone eating French fries with a fork?)
How to Make Cinnamon Sugar French Toast Sticks

This is the second method for making French toast sticks.
Instead of sticking jam between two slices of bread, cut thicker slices and then cut them again into sticks 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches square.
Soak the sticks in egg wash, cook them, and then dredge them in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar.
Here is a detailed recipe for a family-sized batch.
- 6 slices of homemade bread sliced 1 1/4-inches thick
- 3 large eggs
- 3 cups milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2-cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 4 tablespoons butter, softened
- Cut the crusts off the bread. Cut the slices into sticks.
- Combine the eggs, milk, and vanilla in a shallow dish. Mix well.
- Combine the cinnamon and sugar, and put it in a dish that will be used for dredging the French toast sticks.
- Soak the breadsticks in the egg mixture until they absorb the mixture, but not until they are soggy.
- Melt two tablespoons of butter in a pan and add the breadsticks. Cook them until they are golden brown on each side.
- Use tongs to place and turn the sticks in the cinnamon sugar mixture, ensuring that all sides are coated.
- Cook and dredge the remaining sticks, adding more butter as needed.
