7 Spreads to Make Your Sandwiches Rock Stars

Dennis Weaver Dennis Weaver
These were initially intended as dips for chicken fingers, wraps, and such.  They work. But oh my, do they take sandwiches to another level!

  1. Apricot Mustard Dip and Spread
  2. Sour Cream Salsa Dip and Spread
  3. Sweet Georgia BBQ Sauce
  4. California Dipping Sauce and Spread
  5. Texas Dipping Sauce and Spread
  6. Zesty Ranch Sauce and Spread
  7. Mayo Mustard Sauce and Sandwich Spread

#1 Apricot Mustard Dip

I really like apricot, so this dip is one of my favorites for when I want something that’s both sweet and savory. This dip should also work pretty well as a sandwich spread for Monte Cristo sandwiches.

Ingredients

Directions
  • Mix together. Add more jam or more mustard to suit your taste.

#2 Sour Cream Salsa Dip

This dip is a simple one, but it’s one of the best for tacos and nachos. It turns basic sour cream into a creamy salsa that can be as hot as you want it with as much salsa as you can handle.

Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup salsa

Directions
  • Mix together. Add more sour cream or more salsa to suit your taste.

#3  Sweet Georgia BBQ Sauce

This was intended to be a knock-off of the chicken barbecue sauce at Chick-Fil-A that Merri Ann likes so much. It’s not quite. Merri Ann says that it has a little more barbecue sauce than the original, but I can’t taste it, and we both like it. The lemon juice makes it a bit more like a sweet and sour sauce with the lemon balancing the honey. I’ve tried it both as a dip and as a sandwich spread.

Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup barbecue sauce
  • 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)

Directions
  • Mix all the ingredients together.

#4  California Dipping Sauce and Sandwich Spread

This dipping sauce is great with pigs in a blanket and chicken nuggets. It also works well as a sandwich and wrap spread.

Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons sweet relish
  • 1 tablespoon barbecue sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise

Directions
  • Mix all the ingredients together.

#5  Texas Dipping Sauce and Sandwich Spread

This sauce was originally made for dipping fried fish, much like a tartar sauce. It also works well as a spread for sandwiches, wraps, and subs.

Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon sweet relish
  • 2/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped green pepper
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped sweet onion
  • 2 tablespoons Thai sweet chili sauce

Directions
  • Mix all the ingredients together.

Cheese Salami Rye Sandwich

#6  Zesty Ranch Sauce and Dip

This is thinner than most dips and works well as a salad dressing. It’s cool, creamy, and garlicky. Reduce or omit the garlic if you like.

Ingredients
  • ¬º cup fresh buttermilk
  • ¬º teaspoon lemon zest
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped sweet onion
  • ¬Ω clove garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions
  • Mix all the ingredients together.

#7  Mayo-Mustard Sandwich Spread and Dip

This sandwich spread is pretty basic. It’s like mayonnaise with a mustard kick. It works as a sandwich spread and a dip.

Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon sweet relish
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons honey mustard

Directions
  • Mix all the ingredients together.

Other ways to use these spreads:

  • Chicken fingers
  • Burgers
  • Sandwiches
  • Wraps
  • Pigs in a Blanket
  • Corn Dogs
  • and even salads

And the secret of the sauce:

You're the artist here, the creator. It's your job to make food taste great. Change the ratio. Mix and match. You're making tiny batches. If it doesn't work, throw it out and try again.

How did we create these spreads? Mostly, Alice and I just experimented.

The best thing about homemade sauces and spreads is that they‚ are so versatile. Pick a condiment as a base and add whatever ingredients you want to match. If you want something a little sweet, add some jam to your mustard; if you want something spicy, mix salsa with some sour cream.

You're going to come up with your own sauces and spreads, what you and your family will love, and you'll keep a small bottle in the refrigerator for your next sandwich.
