It’s quick and easy to make tuna melt sandwiches. Use firm bread, not the inexpensive soft loaves in the store, to hold together with the most tuna filling and then cook them until golden brown and crisp.
For this recipe we used Black Russian Pumpernickel Bread.
4 large slices bread of your choice
1 6-ounce can chunk-style tuna, drained
2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
4 slices provolone cheese, thinly sliced (or cheese of your choice)
2 to 3 tablespoons mayonnaise, depending on taste
- Combine the tuna, relish, and mayonnaise, mixing well. Spread the tuna mixture on two of the bread slices.
- Place two slices of cheese on each sandwich, overlapping if necessary to make it fit. Top each sandwich with another slice of bread.
- Spread each side of the sandwich with soft butter. Over medium heat, grill the sandwich on a griddle or in a frying pan. When the sandwich reaches a golden brown on one side and the cheese begins to melt, flip it over and grill the other side. Cut sandwich in half and serve while hot.
