Make perfect rolls or hamburger buns every time. Rolls that will make your grandmother proud.

“Aunt Lois was a marvelous cook.  She and Uncle Frank lived on cattle ranch far across the desert.  We loved to take the kids and visit them.  The kids would ride horses and help Uncle Frank feed the cattle.  Aunt Lois would fix a wonderful dinner—the best roast beef, lots of potatoes and gravy, and light, fluffy rolls.  She made the rolls with sour cream and potato water from the boiled potatoes.  With a pat of butter and homemade jam, they were perfect.  These are Aunt Lois’s rolls.”

Now you can make homemade rolls like Aunt Lois’s.  Just follow the easy instructions on the package.  You can use your stand-type mixer, your bread machine, or make them by hand.

  • Step 1: Mix the dough. Use the dough setting on your bread machine or the dough hook on your stand-type mixer. Mix for four minutes.
  • Step 2: Let it rise. Don't worry about the time; just let it rise until it's puffy and doubled in size.
  • Step 3: Form the rolls. Nothing fancy here. Just form uniform balls by pulling the dough around the center and pinching the edges together on the bottom. Lay the rolls in a well-greased pan, cover with plastic and let rise until doubled.
  • Step 4: Let 'em bake. Bake for about 25 minutes in a 350 oven.

You can make hamburger buns just like dinner rolls.

You follow the exact same directions but form the rolls a little differently.  Space them a little further apart and gently press them into a disc with your hand.  They'll try to spring back so wait a couple minutes and gently press them again.  They don't need to be flat, just not round.  Click here for pictures of burger buns formed and instructions for baking buns on the grill.

Delicious and Super Easy
Nikki Gustine (Ada, OK) 11/23/2012 10:10 AM
These were just great! So flavorful and tender. I brushed 'em with butter right after they came out of the oven. Yum, yum, yum. About the only thing easier than making bread in a machine, is making bread from a MIX in a machine. I love it! Did have a wee bit of a problem with the dough: Even though I added only 1 cup of water and 3 tbsp of softened butter, the dough was really sticky and impossible to work with after the dough cycle finished. I had to add, in all, about a half a cup or so of flour just to make the dough workable. I was afraid to add too much, lest I ruin the tenderness of the dough. So I added just enough to get the dough off my hands and into a roll shape on the pan. I'm no bread expert, so I have no idea why this happened. {Nikki, you did the right thing. You should have to add any flour but maybe your measuring cup was off--tapered cups tend to be off by an average of 20%. The wetter the dough, the lighter the bread. We'll send you another mix to try.--Dennis) Wasn't a big deal, and won't stop me from buying this again. Wonderful stuff!

Wonderful Dinner Rolls!!
Summer Hannah (Norman, OK) 12/28/2011 5:21 PM
We had these Christmas Day for dinner--our guest said that I must have the same homemade recipe as his mom and it made him feel like he was home again. We made them a day ahead and warmed them gently in the oven just before we sat down--they were melt- in-the mouth delicious! I was amazed at how easy it was to dump it in the bread maker while I did other chores, then rested off my feet while forming them to bake. We will definitely be getting these again!
