You can buy a syrup and dessert sauce mix similar to this. The lemon syrup mix is made with a lemon pie filling as the base and has ingredients to reduce sugar crystallization. This mix is great to have on hand when you don’t have time for scratch or when you don’t have a stock of lemons in your refrigerator. It has a little different flavor and is very good.

1/3 cup lemon juice
1 tablespoons cornstarch
2/3 cup water
1 cup sugar
lemon zest from one lemon
4 tablespoons butter
1 drop Americolor Lemon Yellow Food Color Gel or equal
Mix the lemon juice and cornstarch in a saucepan with a whisk. Add the water and sugar and heat until bubbly and thick, stirring often. Remove from the heat and stir in the zest, butter, and food coloring.
