How to Select a Cookie and Cake Decorating Set

At the heart of your cookie and cake decorating, is a decorating set. It can be simple and economical or expensive. It can have a barrel or a bag. The bags can be disposable or reusable. Here’s an overview to help you choose what is best for you.

  • A barrel or a bag? You may wish to use a decorating bag or a gun-type decorating set with a barrel that you fill with frosting. Either works well. You need to choose whether you prefer to squeeze a bag or push a plunger or trigger. If you choose a gun-type, you will need to remove the frosting and wash it every time you change colors. If you have arthritis in your hands, you may find a plunger or trigger more comfortable.
  • Disposable or reusable decorating bags? Nothing is more convenient than tossing a bag when you are through but cleaning one is not much bother. New bags will cost you less than a dollar each.
  • How many tips? That depends on how involved you want your decorating to be. You can do a lot with five or six tips and most people find that more than adequate. Of course you can buy many more tips and many bag sets will allow you to add more tips later.
  • How much to spend? You don’t need to spend a lot for a decorating set. You can spend anywhere from a few dollars to twenty dollars or much more.

What are your choices at The Prepared Pantry?

  • Deluxe Cake Decorating Set (Double Bag). This is basically two sets in one and allows you to work with two colors of frosting at the same time without having to stop, clean out one color, and start again. Use this for cookie, cake, and dessert decorating. The bags are reusable. It has six tips for each decorating bag, a total of twelve tips.
  • Deluxe Cake Decorating Set (Single Bag). This is the same set as the double but with one bag and six tips.
  • Deluxe Cookie and Cake Decorating Set. This is a barrel type set that features a large capacity barrel that is easy to load and clean. It has a trigger that is easily accessible and allows you to decorate with one hand. It comes with five easy-to-change tips.
  • Small Decorating Set. This barrel-type set sells for under five dollars. It uses a plunger and is of small capacity. It’s great for kids and its small size lends itself to touch-up work and small jobs. It comes with eight plastic tips.
  • Basic Cake Decorating Bag Set. With this you can decorate like a pro for under five dollars. The set includes one reusable bag, a coupler, three metal tips, and an instruction booklet.
  • Reusable Cake Decorating Bags. These are twelve-inch reusable polyester bags that can be boiled and are dishwasher safe. They are coated to prevent the grease from buttercream frosting from seeping through. They are sold in pairs.
  • Disposable Decorating Bags. These are twelve-inch disposable pastry bags that can be used with standard couplers and tips. They are sold in a package of twelve.
  • Standard Couplers to use with decorating bags. These sell for less than a dollar each.
  • Deluxe Metal Tip Set. This tip only set includes 26 metal tips including a flower nail plus a coupler all in a storage case.
