International Baking
Fifteen percent of our subscribers reside outside of the US. We have customers in tiny villages in the Arctic, in the Australian Outback, in China (We’ve been told that there are only two bakeries in the great city of Shanghai), and even in Antarctica. We appreciate these people. We often write about ingredients that they don’t have access to and use measures and terms that are unfamiliar to them. As we correspond with these good people, we learn of baking and baking challenges around the world. The internet is shrinking the globe.
A lady in South Africa wrote, “American recipes are usually ‘spot on’.” But the measurements are a challenge. We thought we would spend a few minutes and do some conversions, from Fahrenheit to Celsius and from cups to metric.
We would also like to offer a 20% discount on our 12-piece measuring sets for our international customers to help offset the cost of shipping. If you are shipping to a non-US or APO address, enter code INTCUST and we’ll discount your price by 20%.
To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius:
To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit number and then multiple that number by .555.
Example:
350 degrees Fahrenheit = 176 degrees Celcius
350 - 32 318 x .555 176 |
To convert cups to metric:
• One fluid
ounce equals 29.57 milliliters.
• There are eight ounces in a cup so there are 236.6 milliliters
in a cup. (8 x 29.57)
• So, a half cup would equal 118.3 milliliters.
• And 1/4 cup equals 59.15 milliliters.
• Since there are four tablespoons in 1/4 cup, each tablespoon
equals 14.8 milliliters.
• Since there are three teaspoons in a tablespoon, each teaspoon
equals 4.9 milliliters.
